A back to school event billed as “Peace in the City,” didn’t remain peaceful for long, as a man opened fire after being involved in an altercation with another man.
Fortunately for the dozens of children on hand, there was a good guy with a gun to drop the gunman before he could kill anyone.
The Titusville, Florida, event was advertised as a “day of fun” with “no violence,” with school supplies being handed out and haircuts offered, among other things.
But things took an ugly turn when an unidentified man got into a fist fight with another man at the crowded park, left and returned several minutes later with a gun and opened fire, WKMG reported.
The bystander who intervened was legally licensed to carry a firearm and his quick reaction prevented a potentially disastrous outcome. The man who opened fire, who was taken to the hospital with life-threatening injuries, was the only casualty.
“We are extremely grateful that nobody else was injured in this incident” Titusville Deputy Chief Todd Hutchinson told ABC affiliate WFTV. “This suspect opened fire at a crowded public park, this could have been so much worse.”

Dwight Harvey, the DJ for the event, was recording at the time and captured the gunfire on video.
“They started shooting,” Harvey told WKMG. “The bounce houses were full of kids, and they started shooting right under the tree.”
The case remains an active investigation by the Titusville Police Department, but no charges are expected for the good Samaritan who intervened.
